The other day I visited a friend I haven’t seen for a few months. She asked me what I’d been up to. I couldn’t remember, I searched my mind and decided I haven’t done anything note worthy so I said “not much you know”. She looked at me puzzled and pointed out that social media says I’ve been very busy…
I have a thing where I think I should be doing more of this or that and that I’m not doing enough. It’s not just because of social media scrolling I’m like that West African parent that says “What about A?” when their child tells them they worked their socks of and got a B+ (hashtag triggered). However in this case I do that to myself. I know that I don’t need to ram every minute with something to be valuable and I’m trying not to base my value on my output… I’m a work in progress.
Thanks to a ‘Style Session’ with Nicola Rae-Wickham of A Life More Inspired I now have a set of tools that assist me to refocus on building rather than critiquing myself.
This weekend I’ve felt under the weather (after spending glorious but chilly days at Camber Sands beach) and somehow found myself deep within my brain. This spiralled into overthinking and falling into the trap of telling myself I’m not doing enough. I often find myself in this space and can get stuck there. In order to refocus I decided to use some of Nicola’s tools and think about what I’ve been up to in the first quarter of 2017. This is similar to what Nicola would call a brag party. Here goes.
I started 2017 with Leah on BBC Radio London as guests on the Dotun Adebayo show.
We talked about a variety of things. You can read more here. Sadly the show is not available on catch up anymore.
In February half term we had our first ‘meet up‘ at the Victoria & Albert Museum. The sun was bright, our children played, mum’s chatted and connections were made. It was cute and really summed up why we do what we do here.
We collaborated with our darling Cee of Hey Is That Me and have cultivated a gardening / growing project called #HeyitsMRbloom. You can read more about it here. Essentially a few of us insta mama’s and our children are growing stuff in our gardens, balconies and windowsills! It’s very cute fun… I didn’t anticipate how much attention farmer life requires though!. We have killed carrots and the courgettes look like they aren’t committed to growth but we are not quitters, we WILL grow something 🌱
In March a few of us decided to meet up IRL. It wasn’t an ‘event’ we just decided to meet socially and actually did. I’m the queen of bailing out cos #hermitlife but there was no bailing and it turned out to be one of the best evenings out in ages #BYOB for the win and great company of course!
Sonia Meggie of Inspirational YOU invited us to collaborate on a Natural Hair and Wellbeing panel discussion as part of a pop up shop event. Our panel was awesome, AWESOME! You can read about them here. The event was dope, so dope that we are doing another on 20th May and have plans for more!
Leah and I are fully paid up members of #teamawkward when it comes to photos. She won’t mind me saying this because it’s true! We decided that we need professional photos for when The Guardian and BuzzFeed come knocking for press features (hold tight all manifesting crew 🔮 ), however this little operation is run on our, passion, good will and lack of sleep so there is no budget.
As the universe would have it we had previously connected with Nyssa Brielle on another platform and she was looking for people to photograph to build her portfolio. On a sunny Saturday we worked with Nyssa and took some beautiful pics that are not awkward at all!
Last Sunday 9th April we had our second meet up at FUN DMC’s family party at The Southbank Centre. At first the children found it overwhelming… but we ignored them and enjoyed the tunes being played. By the end we had some children dancing on stage and some body popping on the dance floor. I had rosé in a water bottle and brandy in a hip flask (judge me 💁🏿). We hardly took any pics which means we must have enjoyed!
The only downside was spending the hottest day of the year so far indoors. That said it was worth it to shake two foot, see mama’s we met at the last meet up and new mama’s too!
To combat my self doubt and boost my self love I’ve decided to write a list of my wins each Sunday. They don’t have to be big just things to remind myself that I’m alright still. These wins will range from not hitting snooze, doing yoga in the morning, not rushing the school run, putting my rassclart phone down or being bigged up for a piece of work. My aim is to retrain my mind to consciously seek my good rather than ignore some pretty cool stuff whilst focusing on bull shit!
I feel better already!
(I forgot we also recorded our first interview for our podcast!!! 🙋🏿🙋🏾).
If you have something to brag about please feel free to brag in the comments!!
Always with love 💜,
